Why Princess Anne is one of the most loved royals in the UK

Princess Anne has once again been showered with praise for her tireless dedication to her royal duties, particularly her work supporting carers across the UK.

The 73-year-old Princess Royal has been a steadfast supporter of The Carers Trust, an organization close to her heart. On Young Carers Day, the charity's CEO, Kirsty McHugh, spoke to Express UK, offering insight into just how much Princess Anne’s support has meant over the years.

"The Princess Royal has been a wonderful and committed President of Carers Trust over the years. She is a regular visitor to our network of local carer organisations around the UK and has been to countless centres, meeting thousands of carers," McHugh shared.

She emphasized how Princess Anne’s visits always prioritize speaking directly to carers, recognizing their challenges and sacrifices in looking after ill or disabled loved ones.

"She is keen to talk to staff about the job they’re doing, offering some inspiring words of her own. Everyone gets a huge boost from her visits," McHugh added.

Beyond her physical presence and encouraging words, Princess Anne has also played a major role in fundraising efforts to support unpaid carers.

"Alongside those important visits, she has supported The Princess Royal Respite Fund For Carers, which aims to raise £3 million to help thousands of carers get desperately needed respite from their caring roles," McHugh said.

Princess Anne’s involvement in The Carers Trust dates back to 1991, when she helped launch The Princess Royal Trust for Carers. In 2012, after a merger with Crossroads Care, the organization became The Carers Trust, with Princess Anne as its President.

One of the most memorable encounters shared by the charity involved a young adult carer, Holly, who had the chance to meet Princess Anne at the Carers Trust’s 50th anniversary reception.

"My speech was just before hers and I remember being so nervous, especially as I had to stand at the door to greet her as she entered the reception," Holly recalled.

"But she was very easy to talk to and made a real point of connecting with us. She’d even heard of the village I was from. I took my mum as my plus one and they had quite a wonderful conversation too."

The Princess Royal’s handwritten speech also left a lasting impression.

"She made a very strong impression on me yet put me at ease at the same time. Her speech was very inspiring too - I saw it was handwritten and her words felt genuine. She clearly knew so much about the charity’s work. She was calm, empathetic, and warm. I really loved meeting her."
