Kate Middleton may have subtly referenced Meghan Markle during her appearance at the UK-France State Banquet on Tuesday evening.
Attending alongside Prince William, the Princess of Wales stunned in a deep red silk creponne gown by Sarah Burton for Givenchy, a fashion house closely associated with Meghan, who wore the brand for her 2018 royal wedding.
Kate’s choice of French luxury couture for a State Banquet, typically an occasion where she favours British designers, has sparked speculation among royal watchers.
Some believe the Givenchy gown was a deliberate nod or subtle message to her sister-in-law, with whom relations have long been strained.
Adding to the symbolism, Kate wore the iconic Lover’s Knot Tiara, famously favoured by Princess Diana.
This marked her first tiara appearance since November 2023.
The royal’s appearance at the event, which was confirmed only hours earlier, comes as she continues to safeguard her health following a cancer battle.
Her last-minute confirmation didn’t stop her from delivering a powerful style statement at Windsor Castle.
The event was held in honour of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte’s three-day visit to the UK, and marked another high-profile engagement for the future Queen.
