When French President Emmanuel Macron greeted Kate Middleton with a kiss on the hand during his state visit to the UK, royal watchers were quick to wonder: did he just break royal protocol?
The answer is no. Despite being a rare public gesture for the Princess of Wales, Macron’s hand kiss did not violate any formal rules.
According to the Royal Family’s official website, there are “no obligatory codes of behaviour,” only suggested courtesies, such as a bow for men or curtsy for women with handshakes being the most common.
Macron’s hand kiss was a classic French gesture of admiration and was mirrored by King Charles himself, who was seen greeting Brigitte Macron with the same move.
The King has used this old-world charm before, including during the D-Day anniversary in June 2024.
Though hand-kissing is no longer standard in modern royal engagements, it’s not forbidden. The brief moment simply stood out due to its rarity.
The French president and first lady are in the UK for a three-day state visit from July 8–10, based at Windsor Castle due to ongoing renovations at Buckingham Palace.
Day one included a formal welcome, lunch, and a glamorous evening banquet.
