Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have stepped away from royal life in 2020, but a respected British broadcaster believes it's time to encourage their return.
In a column for Saga Magazine, Sir Trevor McDonald expressed his opinion that the Duchess of Sussex never had a real chance at being accepted by the royal family and that her absence is a "great shame".
McDonald argued that Meghan’s background could have positively influenced the monarchy, making it more inclusive and relatable to people who previously felt disconnected from the royal family.
"Meghan, too, could have brought a new dimension to the monarchy. By having a different background, perhaps she could have changed how the Royal Family is perceived by those who had never before felt a strong connection," he wrote.
However, he acknowledged that the very differences that made Meghan unique also led to her rejection.
"Yet it seems to me that precisely because of those differences, she never stood a chance of being accepted."
McDonald described Meghan’s challenges within the royal family, emphasizing the factors that may have worked against her.
"She was a foreigner: an American, a divorcee, a former actress – and black. She was never given a chance to prove herself," he wrote.
He believes the couple’s absence from royal life is especially unfortunate given the recent health struggles within the family, including King Charles and Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnoses.
"We cannot afford to lose someone so young, so full of energy and so imbued with the charitable instincts that are at the core of our Royal Family," he added.
McDonald also reflected on Prince Harry’s personal hardships, particularly the trauma of losing his mother, Princess Diana, at a young age.
"Walking along The Mall following his mother's hearse, he said he was surprised to see so many people in tears, since they never knew her. That is the comment of a child," McDonald wrote, hinting at how Diana’s passing shaped Harry’s life choices.
Despite the couple’s decision to step away from royal duties, McDonald remains hopeful that their move was only temporary.
"I have always felt the move was temporary and that they would return to live in Britain once again," he concluded.
Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals in 2020, citing press intrusion, lack of support, and a desire for independence.
