Social Media is at its worst right now.

There are rare instances of online discussion that serve as a constant reminder of what a waste social media can be sometimes.

One of them is the lookout for the OceanGate Expeditions submersible.

Our timelines have been filled with individuals making fun of the issue ever since a craft carrying five people went missing on a trip to see the Titanic debris on Sunday.

Emergency oxygen can be obtained for four days on board the Titan submarine. Only 24 hours of oxygen are thought to be available to the five missing passengers within the sub.

Social media users around the world have been making light of the situation while families wait impatiently to learn more about the rescue operation. They have shared memes about which retro gaming controller they would use to pilot the craft and have shown disdain for the direst of circumstances.

On social media, many have emphasised the riches of individuals on board, as if the presence of millionaires who paid £250,000 to join the expedition in the first place excuses the scorn and disregard for human life.

You can check some of the unmindful jokes below:

Many users on Twitter have acknowledged this ignorance and expressed their outrage at the gruesome jokes they have been seeing online.

One wrote, "The tweets joking about the missing #OceanGate sub make me physically ill. These are real people you are mocking. Their wealth is immaterial. Have some effing compassion."

Another said: "Two of the people on the Titanic submarine are a father and his teenage son. His wife and daughter are back home absolutely terrified. Sorry to be a buzzkill guys but maybe we shouldn’t joke about it or make fun of these people for how they spent their money, they are real humans."
