Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens globally at Box Office with $120 million

The highly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from Sony won the top spot at this weekend's domestic box office chart, despite Disney's claim of bragging rights for having three films in the top five. 

After earning an astounding $51.7 million on Friday, the greatest opening day of the year thus far, the animated superhero movie is continuing to exceed predictions as it shoots for a $110 million-plus finish in its first weekend. This includes the astounding $17.3 million from Thursday's sneak peeks.

Across the Spider-Verse was initially projected to earn roughly $80 million in its first weekend, but given the current situation, it may end up having a $120 million or higher opening. 

Not only would this be comparable to some of the most recent live-action Marvel films, but it would also represent a roughly threefold rise over the opening weekend of its direct predecessor Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018. Across the Spider-Verse flew past Into the Spider-Verse's first-weekend box office total of $35 million. 

Younger audiences are vital to the market, as The Super Mario Bros. movie demonstrated just a few months ago when it outperformed even the most optimistic predictions to earn $204 million in its extended opening weekend.

With $190 million in its final domestic weekend and $384 million worldwide, Into the Spider-Verse reached its financial ceiling. In addition, it received some genuinely rapturous reviews before winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The response to Across the Spider-Verse has been equally positive. 

In his review, Collider's Ross Bonaime referred to it as "one of the best films of 2023." For an early global total of $65 million, Across the Spider-Verse also made just under $15 million in its first two days of release from foreign markets.
