Love Is Blind reunion review: Lacklustre and Dull

When the host Vanessa Lachey promised, "All of you at home, you haven't missed a thing!" She was not entirely wrong.

Love is Blind season 4 reunion was elongated, repetitive, and lackluster -as is the case with most reality TV reunions.

There was some drama before it aired that may or may not have been some form of buildup for the show.

The reunion that was supposed to be live, experienced an hour-plus delay and also caused Netflix to crash on Sunday night.

What was expected to be a scandalous and risque reunion turned out to be a mainstream and dull show.

When one pressed play on the show, endorphins and adrenaline were high, since one had waited for so long but the run-time caused one to falter.

The show was a whopping 96 minutes long. I suppose it should not have been a surprise, given that producers had the "storylines" of six couples — and three love triangles — to cover.

Hits and Misses

The story of every soap opera writer is that happy couples make for boring stories which is why the Love Is Blind producers packed the beginning with updates on the smugly wedded.

Netflix baked the show very slowly, and the best part was kept for the last. It is clear that Netflix desired a full watch.

The two hosts eventually got around to detailing the rivalries and spats that had occurred and were still ongoing and a topic discussed in the show.

They were, however, unable to completely include every person in the conversation. For example, no one questioned Micah until after five minutes of the Chelsea-Kwame-Micah love triangle discussion.

She did not even speak much for the first half of the reunion and one could sense that Micah was just bored or impatient, no thanks to the hosts’ callousness.

Even later when the host asked her if Paul and she would be married today, Micah unexpectedly started bawling. "Sorry, all the pressure's been off me so I kind of forgot I was here!"

It was not until 30 minutes later that the real drama unfolded, the mean girl Irina came.

True to her character, she immediately started sputtering when asked to explain her behavior. "Sorry, I just need a minute," she stated as everyone feasted on that.

This segment was made for the audience and its appetite for drama and misunderstandings. Apologies occurred ("I completely treated you so poorly, Zach, and nobody deserves to be treated like that at all," said Irina, adding that she had "panic attacks" on the show); accusations were leveled ("If we're real, you went on this show to get famous," said Zach, causing some oooohs to come from the crowd)

Even some truth bombs were dropped (Irina says she wanted to leave after meeting Zach in person, but producers convinced her to go to Mexico with him).

Some false statements were called out (Bliss said to Irina: "You can have troubles with mental illness and that's totally valid, but then you're turning around and you're doing malicious things. It's hard to reconcile those two things").

It should have technically been over but the hunger for ratings and the viewers’ appetite caused them to elongate the episode. The questions kept on coming and most of them were repetitive.

By the third time, Vanessa badgered Paul to explain why he said he couldn't see Micah as a mom; he simply said, "It's a little bit ineffable," with a sigh.

All in all, the Love is Blind season 4 reunion could have been shorter, crispier and bolder but the makers went a little haywire with it.
