Debbie Harry is heading for the big screen in a surprise new role, playing Pamela Anderson’s mother in an upcoming comedy film.
The 80-year-old Blondie legend has signed up to appear in Maitreya, a quirky new project starring former Baywatch star who takes the lead as a New Age healer with a complicated family life.
The film is being directed by Portlandia creator Jonathan Krisel and written by The Whale screenwriter Samuel D. Hunter.
It follows Pamela’s character, Maitreya, a rising figure in the world of spiritual healing who is preparing to attend a big conference in India when her plans suddenly take a turn.
She receives a call from her estranged sister telling her their father is seriously ill.
Instead of staying home, Maitreya makes a bold choice, dragging her entire family, including her mother Barbara that is played by Debbie Harry, along to the conference.
While there, she also secretly gathers material for a new book, all while trying to “heal” her own messy family relationships.
The film is already being launched for sale at Cannes, with filming set to begin later this year.
Production company Caviar says the project has everyone “giddy with excitement” thanks to its offbeat humour and emotional family drama.
For the 58-year-old actress, the role continues her Hollywood comeback.
She has recently been working on Queen of the Falls, a crime-tinged road romance alongside actor Guy Pearce.
The film follows two lovers on the run, Pamela as a roadkill cleaner and Pearce as a fugitive, racing towards Niagara Falls in a wild journey about freedom, escape and love on the edge.
