Matthew Lillard is having the last laugh after landing a major role in the next Superman blockbuster.
The 56-year-old actor, best known for playing killer Stu Macher in Scream and the lovable Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, has reportedly joined the cast of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the hotly anticipated sequel to James Gunn’s Superman reboot.
According to reports, Lillard’s mystery role is being kept tightly under wraps, but the film already boasts a star-studded line-up including David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult and Nathan Fillion.
The movie is currently in production ahead of its planned July 2027 cinema release.
For Lillard, the casting marks another huge step in a career comeback he’s openly admitted has been fuelled by nostalgia.
The Thirteen Ghosts actor recently revealed fans’ renewed obsession with early 2000s favourites like Scooby-Doo helped put him back in demand.
He said people are “longing for ye olde times”, joking that audiences don’t necessarily miss him, they just miss the era he represents.
After years of career highs and lows, Lillard has enjoyed a fresh wave of success thanks to Five Nights at Freddy's, where he played villain William Afton, as well as appearances in Daredevil: Born Again and The Life of Chuck.
The actor also recently won praise from fans after shrugging off criticism from legendary director Quentin Tarantino, who admitted he wasn’t a fan of his work.
He later joked the public support felt like “living through your own wake” as fans rushed to defend him online.
