Christopher Nolan, director of the highly anticipated film The Odyssey, shared an interesting parallel between the Greek epic poem and the modern Comic books.
The Oscar winner director noticed that three of the cast members in the film, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, have all performed in major superhero block busters.
While discussing that with Steven Colbert on The Late Show, the Oppenheimer filmmaker said, “Even comic book culture, whether you’re talking about Marvel or D.C. or all the rest, a lot of it comes directly from the Homeric Epics.”
Lauding the author of the epic, he likened it to George Lucas, saying, “The thing about Homer is, nobody knows if that was a person. Homer, in a way, is the sort of George Lucas of his time.”
“The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day,” he continued. “It’s very directly this desire for us to feel or believe gods could walk amongst us, and I think the modern comic book is kind of our expression of that.”
The Odyssey is setting its pace to become one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the 2026 summer season.
Outside of Holland, Hathaway and Pattinson, the blockbuster cast includes, Matt Damon, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page and Benny Safdie.
The Odyssey will be released on July 17.
