Two of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, Michael and the sequel to the cult classic The Devil Wears Prada are now out and their box office debut numbers show a contrast between the films.
The Michael Jackson biopic hit the cinemas on April 24, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 making its way to theatres on May 1.
Despite the late debut, a social media account reported on X, “‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ breaks the global record for biggest opening weekend of any live-action movie this year ($233 MILLION). The record was previously held by ‘MICHAEL’ ($218m).”
The monetary success of the sequel has made headlines already, since it has exceeded expectations and has also become the first Meryl Streep film to earn this much.
However, one internet user took to the comments under the report to write “Michael didn’t open in japan, korea or russia yet while prada 2 had a full opening with only 14m difference.”
Another remarked, “Why are we throwing shade on Michael? I love Anne Hathaway and want both films to succeed, but there’s no need to throw shade. Michael had a $97 million domestic opening with fewer theaters. TDWP2 opened in 4,150 theaters compared to Michael’s 3,955 theaters.”
A third netizen chimed in “SOUTH KOREA, JAPAN AND RUSSIA STILL PENDING RELEASE OF MICHAEL,” to refute the report and defend the Jafaar Jackson film.
