Anne Hathaway opened up about her experience working on set of Mother Mary with Jack Antonoff.
The Princess Diaries actress stars as the titular character, a pop star who abruptly ends her tour after an emotional crisis before reconnecting with an estranged friend and fashion designer (Michaela Coel) to prepare for a comeback performance.
In the film the Interstellar star performed songs written by Chali xcx and produced by Antonoff.
In an interview with the Discussing Film, the Oscar winner shared how Antonoff worked as a “guide” for her and how “humbling” was the experience.
Hathaway is no stranger to singing performances in the films. She has taken musical roles in 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables, and in 2011’s animated film, Rio.
However, she revealed how different her experience was from working as a musical theatre actress.
“It’s kind of like asking if a ten-speed bike and a Harley are the same thing,” she said, adding, “Technically, yeah, it’s the same genus, but the specifics are completely different, and I had to learn how to ride a Harley, you know, the intricacies of the voice to the microphone.”
The Idea of You actress continued, “It’s not something I’d ever really gotten to play around with, and that took a while for me to wrap my head around, but I had an amazing guide in Jack Antonoff.”
She further explained that he kept on giving her notes during recording sessions and over the time period. She reflected on his guidance until they gradually shaped the music into what listeners hear today.
Mother Mary was released on April 17.
