John Mayer is opening up about his Grammy winning song Daughters and also the motivations behind it at the time.

The 48-year-old reflected on the 2003 track at the opening concert of HISTORYTalks in Philadelphia, in which he was telling fathers to be good parent to their daughters because it will directly impact their future relationships.

“What was a 24-year-old boy doing, telling fathers?” the singer asked before laughing and admitting that the real reason for the song was very selfish.

“I was thinking in very circuitous and clever ways that it was really about me, a young guy, so selfishly upset that he couldn't be with the woman he loved, because he thought that her father must have had something to do with it," Mayer added.

The Gravity singer went on to say that when you are younger, such thought processes seem logically correct and play out well in songs.

Mayer remarked that older logic played out more awkwardly in songs because when you are older you can maturely overcome issues and negative emotions.
