Meghan Markle’s first encounter with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was far more awkward than royal fans ever imagined, and Prince Harry himself spilled the details.
According to Harry’s memoir Spare, Meghan had no idea who Andrew was when she met him back in 2016, long before she officially joined the Royal Family.
At the time, Meghan and Harry had only recently gone public with their relationship, and the prince was bringing her into the royal fold for the first time.
But Meghan’s reaction was unexpectedly brutal. Harry revealed that Meghan mistook Andrew for a staff member, thinking he worked for the Queen rather than recognising him as her second-born son.
In the book, Harry recalls: "After a moment, Meg asked me something about the Queen’s assistant."
Completely confused, Harry tried to figure out who she meant, until Meghan clarified: "that man holding the purse. That man who walked her to the door".
Only then did Harry realise she was talking about Andrew.
According to US Weekly, Meghan simply didn’t know who the disgraced royal was, even though she had reportedly researched the Royal Family before meeting them.
Harry wrote: "She definitely hadn’t Googled us."
The now infamous lunch took place at Royal Lodge with Andrew, Sarah Ferguson, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank present. As Harry put it: "It was all very pleasant."
