Calls for Prince Andrew to be stripped of his Duke of York title have intensified following new revelations about his continued contact with the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
A resurfaced 2011 email shows Andrew allegedly telling Epstein, “We are in this together,” just one day after the now-infamous photo of the Duke with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual assault, was made public.
Andrew has consistently denied the allegations.
But despite growing public anger, King Charles cannot personally revoke his brother’s Dukedom.
While the monarch has the power to grant royal titles, removing one requires a special act of Parliament, a move not seen in over a century.
According to the House of Lords Library, “A peerage can only be removed by an act of parliament. The most recent act that did this was the Titles Deprivation Act 1917.”
