Sarah Ferguson’s own family reportedly questioned her reasons for marrying Prince Andrew, according to royal biographer Andrew Lownie.
The author delves into the Duke and Duchess of York’s turbulent relationship in his new book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York.
Lownie claims that even Fergie’s relatives were unsure whether her heart truly belonged to Andrew, or to royal life itself.
“Even Sarah’s own family were not sure about the relationship. She’s either in love with Andrew or in love with the Royal Family, and I think it’s the latter,” he writes.
The couple’s whirlwind romance began at Ascot in June 1985, and by July 1986, they were married at Westminster Abbey.
But according to Lownie, their engagement raised eyebrows inside Buckingham Palace.
“There were mixed feelings in the Royal Family. Compared to Diana, she was easy-going and made Andrew happy, but Fergie couldn’t stop talking, and sometimes inappropriately,” he notes.
Sources also claimed palace insiders were wary of potential “scandals in her private life.”
One friend told Lownie that Sarah herself was “petrified” about what she was getting into.
