Matt Reeves addressed the growing speculation surrounding Cristin Milioti's return as Sofia Falcone in Batman II.

On September 14, the 59-year-old director explained that the script for the movie was already far along in development, and there was no opportunity for the role.

He confirmed that Milioti won’t be returning as Falcone in the second installment of Batman.

Speaking at the Emmys, he said, “Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show.”

The filmmaker went on to praise her performance in The Penguin, “I think what she did in the show is just astonishing. That character, I mean, creating.”

He further added that the decision came due to the film's storyline, and her character did not fit in this one. He admitted, “There are some things where it’s like, oh, we’d love to do this, but actually that doesn’t fit within where the story goes.”

Notably, Milloti won the 2025 Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series for her performance in The Penguin. This was her first nomination and win.

The Penguin is a spin-off of Batman, set in Gotham, and follows Oz Cobb, played by Colin Farrell, who becomes a notorious gangster in the city.

Furthermore, Reeves touched on the subject of his future Batman-related projects and explained that projects in prep are given the highest priority right now.

For the unversed, Robert Pattinson’s Batman II will be released on October 1, 2027.

Did Matt Reeves win an Emmy in 2025?
