The Downton Abbey stars are reflecting on all the good times they had with the incredible Maggie Smith.

The cast members were promoting the brand new Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, when they commented on her personality on set.

In an interview with Page Six, Kevin Doyle, who initially plays Joseph Molsely the Crawley family butler stated, “She loved the girls, didn’t she?” referring to Smith’s on-screen granddaughters, Lady Mary, Lady Edith played by Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael respectively.

The 65-year-old added that the two time Academy Award winner had a lovely relationship with the actresses, as she would just chat with them and tell them stories.

“[She] loved acting. She loved work,” added another co-star, Allen Leech who portrayed Tom Branson, the chauffeur-turned-estate manager in the beloved series.

The actors’ latest project in the Downtown Abbey universe marks their first without Smith, whose character Violet Crawley was killed off in the 2022 movie Downtown Abbey: A New Era.

Meanwhile, they also talked about how they did not expect the series to blow up the way it did, especially since they would repeatedly get told that costume dramas were not as popular anymore, and they ended up proving their adversaries wrong.

What was Maggie Smith's best line in Downton Abbey?

Smith’s lines like “What is a weekend?” and “Don’t be defeatist, dear. It’s very middle-class,” have become some of the lines people quote on the daily.
