The death of Giorgio Armani at 91 has not only closed a chapter in fashion history but also resurfaced his touching, lesser-known connection to Princess Diana.
On August 31, 1997, the very day of her tragic passing in Paris, Diana was photographed in a tailored Armani blazer.
The sharp, minimalist piece embodied her polished style in the years after her divorce from then-Prince Charles.
Armani later revealed that their relationship went beyond that single outfit.
At the time of Diana’s death, he had been working on a dress she had personally chosen for an upcoming engagement that fall.
“She found that style of her own, strictly controlling any temptation to overdo things,” Armani told WWD at the time, praising her preference for “clean, modern lines that set off her great face and figure.”
The designer noted that Diana picked the simplest design from the sketches he had sent her, a choice that spoke volumes about her evolution toward understated elegance in her final years.
Though Diana was known for championing British designers like Catherine Walker, she also embraced international fashion houses including Versace, Dior, and Armani.
