Sofia Coppola opened up about working alongside fashion designer Marc Jacobs for the documentary Marc by Sofia.

In a conversation with Variety, the 54-year-old filmmaker revealed that she had doubts about her capabilities before filming began.

Sofia admitted that her nervousness stemmed from the thought of directing her long-time friend's film.

She said, “And so when the Cutlers [producers] approached me, I thought, 'I can’t do that. Because that’s my friend, I’d have to do a good job.”

Sofia admitted that the experience was new for her, and that it would be fun to “share all his references and inspirations with the younger generation.”

Later in the interview, Jacobs explained that he first bonded with the former actress back in 1992, over their similar taste in art and music.

He said, “I felt very comfortable exposing everything to Sofia. It felt very natural once I was over the initial anxiety of actually participating.”

Notably, Marc by Sofia will follow the story of the 62-year-old head designer, capturing the essence of his creative process while offering an unconventional look at his life.

The A24 documentary is produced by R.J. Cutler and Jane Cha Cutler and directed by Sofia Coppola. It will premiere during the Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2025; however, a theatre release hasn’t been announced yet.

Why did Sofia Coppola stop acting?

After receiving backlash for her performance in The Godfather Part III, Sofia Coppola stepped back from acting and followed in her father, Francis Ford Coppola’s footsteps to become a filmmaker.
