It seems the struggle to select a release date for Mortal Kombat II is still ongoing, with Warner Bros. moving it to May 15, 2026.
It was previously set to drop on October 4, avoiding the movie traffic that usually occurs in that time period.
Sony’s Final Destination: Bloodlines saw major success in the May timeline earlier this year.
The film is based on the iconic game, starring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, as well as Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada.
“Johnny Cage joins other fighters in the ultimate, no-holds-barred battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn, a powerful tyrant who threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders,” reads the synopsis.
New Line chief Richard Brenner presented some early footage of Mortal Kombat II at CinemaCon back in April, teasing, “Expect amazing fights, epic battles and a few fatalities.”
The trailer ended up dropping last month, where Urban’s character, who is an actor, is asked for a reboot of his show, to which he responds, “Nobody wants that. S*** went out in the ’90s.”
