Sarah Ferguson is one of a kind: royal photographer praises royal as she nears 66

As Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, approaches her 66th birthday this October, veteran royal photographer Arthur Edwards has opened up about his decades-long friendship with the famously spirited royal.

“I’ve known Sarah Ferguson for 40 years,” Edwards writes in The Sun. “And there’s only one thing I’ll say about her - Fergie was just so different to any other member of the Royal Family.”

He recalls one moment from a speech in Los Angeles where a member of the audience shouted, “I love you, Fergie!” The Duchess didn’t miss a beat: “I’ll get your number later!” she quipped.

Of course, Sarah has also weathered her share of public scrutiny.

Edwards alluded to her tabloid-filled past, including the infamous 1992 “toe-sucking” scandal with Texan millionaire John Bryan.

“She just couldn’t cope with being bossed around by the men in grey suits at the Palace and decided to leave the Royal Family,” he said.

Sarah married Prince Andrew in 1986, becoming a formal part of the Firm. Their separation was announced in 1992 and finalized in 1996.

Despite their divorce, the pair remain famously close, even continuing to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor and co-parenting their two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

“She will always be there for Andrew,” Edwards noted. “Sarah and Andrew are still very close and will be until the day they die.”
