Meghan Markle celebrated her 44th birthday on August 4, but the occasion passed without any public acknowledgment from the royal family, a silence some commentators have noted as significant amid ongoing tensions.
While a few celebrities and fans shared birthday messages online, royal social media accounts remained quiet.
The last time the Firm publicly marked Meghan’s birthday was in 2021, when she turned 40, a year after stepping down from royal duties with Prince Harry.
Royal commentator Lee Cohen told the Express the lack of public message was “not just a snub” but an “understandable dodge of her drama,” referencing the couple’s public criticism of the monarchy, including allegations made during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
“The royal family’s silence wasn’t a snub; it was an understandable dodge of her drama,” said Cohen.
“From the Oprah interview’s racism allegations to the mock curtsy that spat on the late Queen’s legacy - why would they send birthday wishes to someone who’s been so openly critical?”
In addition to ongoing tensions, another explanation may lie in a change to royal protocol reportedly introduced by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
According to royal watchers, the monarchy now only publicly marks milestone birthdays, those ending in zero, for non-working royals.
