With Superman (2025) set to hit theaters this week, Nicholas Hoult is peeling back the layers of his villainous turn as Lex Luthor, revealing why the iconic DC antagonist despises the Man of Steel so intensely.

In a recent interview on the DC Studios Showcase podcast, the 35-years-old English actor delved into the psychology of his version of Lex Luthor, who clashes with David Corenswet’s Superman in the upcoming film.

“I think that's what's fun to dig into with Lex. I think one [reason] being that he's worked to be in some ways this hero, godlike figure, and he believes he deserves this adoration and respect and love from humanity.”

The Nosferatu star’s interpretation of the role aligns well with classic portrayals of Lex as a narcissistic genius who hates Superman not just for his power, but for effortlessly earning the admiration Lex craves.

The BAFTA award nominee described his role as Lex as “driven by love,” but one whose ego transforms that desire into something darker.

"If someone had ultimate power and the ability to do anything, what happens when what he does doesn’t align with everyone’s belief of what is right?” he contemplated.

Lex Luthor’s hatred for Superman has been explored across comics, TV, and film for 85 years, with each adaptation offering a slightly different spin.

Hoult’s version appears to blend jealousy, wounded pride, and a narcissist, making him a formidable foe for Corenswet’s Superman.

When is Superman releasing?
