Prince William, Kate Middleton gearing up for special royal duty in Scotland

Prince William and Kate Middleton are getting ready to leave England next week for a special royal assignment in Scotland.

Kensington Palace confirmed the Prince and Princess of Wales will travel to Scotstoun, near Glasgow, on Thursday, May 22, to take part in the naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow, a next-generation anti-submarine warship.

The state-of-the-art Type 26 frigate is one of the most advanced in the Royal Navy's fleet, built to protect the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers.

As the official Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, a title she was appointed to back in 2021, Princess Kate will lead the naming tradition by smashing a bottle of whisky against the hull, a modern take on the age-old naval custom.

After the ceremonial moment, the royal couple will board HMS Glasgow to meet with shipbuilders from BAE Systems and Royal Navy personnel who will give insight into the vessel’s high-tech capabilities and ongoing construction progress.

Their visit will also include a stop at the BAE Systems Shipbuilding Academy, where William and Kate will speak with apprentices and recent graduates who’ve trained in critical trades like welding, fabrication, and electrical systems.

The royals will also engage with a wide range of employees from diverse backgrounds involved in the project, and connect with members of HMS Glasgow’s ship’s company and their families.
