As speculation swirls over the future of the monarchy, one former royal insider is setting the record straight: King Charles has no intention of abdicating — ever.
At 76 years old, the monarch is still undergoing treatment following a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. But insiders say Charles’s devotion to royal duty remains unshaken and according to his former butler, Grant Harrold, stepping down isn’t even on the table.
Speaking on behalf of Prime Casino, Harrold gave a blunt verdict on the possibility of abdication: “No. Just like his mother, he’ll continue to serve until his final breath.”
Harrold, who worked closely with Charles from 2004 to 2011 when he was still Prince of Wales, added that the monarch’s sense of duty is “ingrained in him” and that abdicating is simply “not in his nature.”
The former royal aide explained that the King has already made provisions in case his health prevents him from carrying out day-to-day duties.
Charles has appointed Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh as Counsellors of State, meaning they are legally empowered to represent him if needed.
“He’s made it clear that others can step in temporarily if needed, just like the late Queen did in her final years,” Harrold said.
“But abdicating the throne? That would be the very last thing he’d ever consider.”
King Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024 and has been undergoing regular treatment ever since.
After initially postponing public-facing duties for nearly 12 weeks, the monarch resumed a full schedule of engagements, including a demanding tour of Australia and Samoa.
Despite the brief hospital visit, a royal source indicated that King Charles’ treatment remains on track and that his planned state visit to Italy next month is still expected to proceed.
