Even behind bars, Tsu Surf is giving fans hope with a cryptic tease of his return.
The battle rapper is serving a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to racketeering and unlawful possession of a firearm in April 2023.
Prosecutors accused Surf of being a member of the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips and being involved in drug distribution and street violence.
Surf initially faced up to 30 years in prison but U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton reduced his sentence after the Newark legend turned himself in.
Despite his incarceration, Surf has stayed in touch with his fans by sharing his prison experience on social media.
The artist even posted a handwritten letter on his birthday last January calling his imprisonment “NECESSARY” for self-discovery.
More recently, Surf got his fans’ hopes up when he hinted that he may be released from prison sooner than expected.
On April 22, Surf posted a picture of a billboard on his Instagram that said, “This message is brought to you by Mozzy. Free Surf.”
The post also includes the caption: “FREE ME TIL ITS BACCWARDS. BE HOME IN A SECOND. DON’T BLINK.”
The post is likely to promote the new collaborative track FREE SURF, which was recorded via a phone call from prison.
Nevertheless, the words on the billboard along with the hopeful caption have many fans believing that they may see their favourite battle rapper walk out of prison sooner rather than later.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Tsu Surf is among the most respected battle rappers with a large fan following. The artist has collaborated with many mainstream rappers on various mixtapes.
