A close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has come out to lend support to the Sussexes after stating that members of the media and general public are actively "downplaying" the couple's paparazzi car chase.

CBS Mornings host Gayle King spoke to Page Six and condemned the "unfortunate" incident and gave her two cents on the matter as she shared how the ordeal was troubling as a whole due the reactions that accused the couple of being dramatic.

"I think it was a very unfortunate incident. It’s troubling to me that anybody would try to downplay what that would mean to them. That’s very troubling to me."

Speaking of the couple's emotions following the intense car chase, King expressed how "unsettling" it was that the couple's critics attempted to "minimise how [Harry and Meghan] felt in that moment".

"I'm just really sorry it happened and very sorry they had to go through it," she said.

"Everybody can have all of their opinions but I always go back to, 'How did they feel in that moment?'"

For the unversed, Prince Harry, Meghan and her mother Dorian Ragland, were followed by paparazzi via car after the trio departed a New York City charity.

In the midst of the chase, they briefly stopped by a police station before proceeding to take a cab.

Following the incident, the royal couple's spokesperson released a statement that they were involved in a "near catastrophic car chase" that spanned "over two hours".

On the contrary, conflicting reports revealed that, as per police, the pursuit short with no injuries.

In addition the cab driver driving the Sussexes also played down the incident saying that was not a chase even though paparazzi "were following us the whole time".
