Minda Kaling’s take on the character of Velma from Scooby-Doo did not land well with the audience.

The spin-off series, which premiered on Thursday, Jan. 12, was described as, "an adult animated comedy series discovering the origin story of Velma Dinkley," one of the original five characters from the classic cartoon series, by the show creators.

Since its premiere, the show only earned 1.8 stars on IMDb, 1.4 stars by audiences on Google and a 46% rating by Top Critics with an average audience score of 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.

As an executive producer and the voice behind the character, Kaling re-imagined Velma as an Indian girl.

While the audiences and critics acknowledged the show’s incredible animation and design, they were taken aback by its problematic dialogues, far-reaching plot, and awful comedic timing.

"I’m happy Mindy Kaling’s style of writing brown girls that hate themselves wasn’t around when I was younger & only became a thing when I was at the age where I loved my heritage and skin color," noted Women's Republic founder Sai Sailaja Seshadri, "I can’t imagine being young & already self-conscious and then seeing that portrayal."

"mindy kaling needs to stop portraying indian girls as losers. i’m personally extremely cool and sick of it," one tweet read.

"the fact that Velma is just an obvious self insert for mindy kaling is so [expletive] lame," another wrote.

"The only thing I’ll say about that Velma show is that it’s insane to me that 'adult' shows rely so much on vulgarity and snark as their only sensibilities when stuff like this is already very funny," a fourth expressed.
