Charli xcx's latest album gets an AI boost
Charli xcx has lifted the lid on the surprising role artificial intelligence played in creating her latest album, Music, Fashion, Film.
The Von Dutch hitmaker admitted she and producers A. G. Cook and Finn Keane turned to an AI-powered audio tool while crafting No One Lasts Forever, one of the standout tracks from the record released on Friday.
Rather than relying on AI to write songs, the trio used a plugin called Concatenator, which analyses recorded sounds before rebuilding them into entirely new audio.
Cook explained that the software transformed random snippets from a jam session into the song's finished drum pattern, using almost every sound they had captured in the studio.
Despite the high-tech approach, the 33-year-old singer insisted the emotional heart of the track remained deeply personal.
Speaking on the Tape Notes podcast, she revealed the song had changed her perspective on both her life and her creativity.
"This song has made me change the way I think about my life and my art," she said, describing it as a defining moment during the album's creation.
Cook also stressed that the record was built around real performances rather than computer-generated music.
He explained that the team recorded guitars, bass and drum machines by hand, with very little MIDI used throughout the production.
The producers even embraced chaos during the sessions, running around the studio plugging in random equipment and deliberately trying to create what Keane jokingly called "the ugliest things".
Unexpectedly, those strange noises became the foundation of the song's distinctive drum sound, with the entire second half of the track assembled from fragments of their experimental jam session.
