George Lucas is set to make an unexpected voice cameo in the upcoming Minions film, adding another surprising name to the animated franchise’s expanding universe.
The casting was revealed after Illumination head Chris Meledandri spoke about the project and the team’s connection with the Star Wars filmmaker.
The film producer confirmed to Collider that the 82-year-old has joined the cast of Minions & Monsters, which arrives in cinemas on July 1.
“He loves Illumination movies, and specifically Despicable Me, and even more specifically, the Minions,” he said, adding that the revelation was met with excitement across the studio.
He went on to explain that the idea of casting Lucas came naturally once a character was developed for the story.
“I said, ‘Well, what if we could get George?’ And they’re like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ But it happened very quickly — I got such a fast yes,” he recalled.
Moreover, he shared that Lucas is already open to returning for future installments, hinting at continued involvement in the franchise.
“I saw him recently, and he’s already talking to me about the role he wants to do next,” he said.
Minions & Monsters follows the Minions as they attempt to film a monster movie in 1920s Hollywood, with a cast that also includes Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, and Trey Parker.
