Matt Damon has stepped into a major Hollywood shake-up after reportedly replacing Ryan Gosling in the upcoming mystery film from Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
The Oscar-winning filmmaking duo, known as The Daniels, are developing an untitled project that was originally set to star Gosling.
But he has now exited the film due to scheduling clashes, with reports also pointing to creative differences behind the scenes.
Damon is now said to be in early talks to take the lead role in the ambitious new movie, which is already being described as another wildly inventive blend of genres.
According to industry reports, the story will span two timelines, one set in the present day and another in the 1900s featuring teenage characters.
The plot is expected to weave together global warming, time travel and even a possible superhero angle, though official details are being kept tightly under wraps.
Sources claim the Barbie actor had initially agreed to a “substantial” supporting role as the father of one of the teen leads, but later pushed for script changes and a larger presence in the story.
While the filmmakers were reportedly open to adjustments, production deadlines tied to a California tax credit meant there was little room for delay.
Casting has been underway since 2024, with names like Jack Black previously floated for roles before the focus shifted.
The Daniels, fresh from their Oscar-winning success with Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022, have said the follow-up has taken longer because of the complexity of the world around them.
Director Daniel Kwan has described the film as a “fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart”, promising something “very existential” that reflects today’s turbulent times.
