Damon Lindelof has revealed he was “fired” from a planned Star Wars film.

The 53-year-old screenwriter admitted that is ambitious creative vision simply “didn’t work” inside the galaxy far, far away.

The Star Wars project saw Lindelof brought on board in 2022 to develop a new installlment, before he exited the movie the following year after behind-the-scenes changes and story disagreements.

Speaking on the House of R podcast, he said he was initially asked what he believed a Star Wars film should be.

He pitched his idea, got the job, but later admitted, “I was fired off of a Star Wars movie.”

He reflected, “I was wrong, at least through that prism,” adding that the concept just didn’t fit the scale and expectations of the franchise.

He worked alongside writing partners Justin Britt-Gibson and Rayna McClendon on the early development.

Lindelof explained that the team attempted something unusually ambitious and that was exploring a clash between “a Force of nostalgia and a Force of revision” within the story itself.

He compared it to staging a kind of “Protestant Reformation” inside Star Wars, but admitted the idea ultimately failed to land in a way that felt right for the saga.

He also described the writing process as slow and complicated, with constant debates about tone, canon, and how the film would connect to Episode IX or even launch a new trilogy.

He compared working on the project to steering a massive tanker, saying any change took time to take effect.

Lindelof added that even defining the future of the franchise is tricky, with ongoing questions about whether new characters should take centre stage or if familiar faces like Mando and Grogu are now the heart of the story.
