Anne Hathaway opened up about her long-standing “diva” rumours surrounding her public image, since her early career.

The Devil Wears Prada actress admitted that she when she was beginning her career in Hollywood, she had to be “armoured” in order to protect herself.

In an interview with Vogue Australia to promote her hit fashion film sequel, she admitted that she was frightened to be her true "sweet" self.

She said, “And the truth is—the genuine truth is—I’m not a perfect person by any stretch of the imagination.”

“But one thing, I’m a sweet person, and I think for many, many years it really frightened me to be a young, sweet woman, so I think I armoured and hardened to try to protect myself,” the Princess Diaries star explained.

Her reputation took a hit during the early 2010s, particularly at the time of award season for her performance in Les Miserables.

Her acceptance speeches and public appearances were mocked online, with backlash often referred to as "Hathahate."

Looking back Hathaway said she understands why people may have misread her behaviour but insists it came from place of pressure rather than ego.

Despite past criticism, The Odyssey actress remains one of the industry’s most successful and versatile star.

Her upcoming highly anticipated film, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to release on May 1.

In addition to that her upcoming projects includes, Mother Mary, The Odyssey, Verity and The End of Oak Street.
