Pop royalty drama is bubbling again as Janet Jackson is said to have quietly stepped back from the hotly anticipated biopic Michael, a film centred on her late brother, Michael Jackson.

The revelation came straight from sister LaToya Jackson, who spilled the detail at the film’s glittering premiere.

Speaking candidly, she confirmed Janet had been approached but “kindly declined”, adding that her decision should be respected.

A family united in legacy, perhaps, but not entirely on screen.

The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, promises a sweeping look at the King of Pop’s life, with Jaafar Jackson stepping into his uncle’s iconic shoes.

Early reactions suggest the transformation is uncanny, with LaToya gushing that viewers may “forget it’s Jaafar” altogether.

But behind the scenes, not everything is hitting the right note.

Paris Jackson has publicly criticised the project, accusing it of catering to fans who “still live in the fantasy”.

The movie, backed by Michael’s estate and executive producer Prince, has already faced turbulence, including costly reshoots reportedly reaching $15 million.

Controversial elements tied to long-standing allegations were also removed, fuelling claims of “whitewashing” from critics.

Despite the noise, Fuqua insists the family’s involvement has been key, stressing the importance of telling Michael’s story with care.

He also struck a diplomatic tone on Janet’s absence, praising her support for Jaafar even if she chose not to appear.
