Fans of Schitt’s Creek are mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars, as new details emerge about the extraordinary talent of Catherine O’Hara after her death aged 71.
The beloved actress, best known for her unforgettable portrayal of the eccentric Moira Rose, passed away on January 30 after a short illness, leaving co-stars and fans heartbroken.
Now, her on-screen son and the show’s co-creator Dan Levy has opened up about just how much she brought to the hit series, and it turns out, it was far more than anyone realised.
Speaking on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend with host Conan O’Brien, Dan revealed Catherine had a habit of sending late-night emails before filming, and they weren’t small tweaks.
Instead, they were “unbelievable” full rewrites of entire scenes.
Recalling the now-famous messages, the 42-year-old writer said they always began politely with: “Gentlemen, some thoughts…”, before transforming into detailed, top-to-bottom script changes that left writers stunned.
Even Seth Rogen had previously pointed out her unique approach, something Big Mistakes star instantly recognised from his own experience.
Despite being a powerhouse performer, Catherine’s creativity went far beyond acting.
Dan admitted much of Moira’s iconic personality came directly from her mind, describing her thinking as being “on another level”.
The Emmy-winning sitcom, which also starred Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy, ran from 2015 to 2020 and became a global sensation.
In the days since her passing, Happiest Season hitmaker says he still finds himself watching clips of Catherine online – unable to look away.
“She is impossible not to watch,” he admitted.
