Danny DeVito could soon be swapping his Hollywood roles for the Mushroom Kingdom, with insiders tipping him to voice the iconic villain Wario in an upcoming Super Mario movie sequel.
Charlie Day, DeVito’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star and the voice of Luigi, is all for it.
Speaking to Polygon, he gushed: “I would choose my buddy Danny DeVito. He's perfect for it. He's just so funny.”
Donald Glover, who voices Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, agreed, adding: “Oh, that's a good choice! That's an excellent choice. Just tell him to call up Chris [Meledandri]. It works!”
Even Bowser Jr.’s voice, Benny Safdie, backtracked on his earlier idea of “Chris Pratt, but with a mustache,” and threw his support behind DeVito.
Jack Black, who voices Bowser, said: “Now you're speaking my language. I love Danny DeVito as Wario. He's a legend. No one knows that better than Charlie Day.”
Not everyone is on board, though. Keegan-Michael Key, the voice of Toad, suggested a curveball pick: Michael Shannon.
“You gave Michael Shannon a crack at Wario? He would do something very interesting,” Key said.
Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy revealed her own voice-acting struggles as Princess Peach, admitting she once vomited during her first recording session.
Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she explained: “I did not realise how taxing it would be because you're yelling continuously the whole time. I think the first time I ever did it, I threw up.”
She also revealed the gruelling “efforts” sessions, which mimic action sequences solo in the booth.
“You kind of visit yourself back and think, ‘God, I hope no one ever sees this,’” she said.
Chris Pratt returns as Mario, with Brie Larson joining as Princess Rosalina, while directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are back at the helm, promising another wild ride through the Mushroom Kingdom.
