It became more momentous for the Wicked Little Letters actress, as she received the accolade from fellow Irish star and Oscar winner Cillian Murphy.

The mother of one, continued saying that to receive the award from someone she recognises, is an Irish and an actor, whom she admires and has great respect for, "was a really special moment and one I won't forget."

In her acceptance speech she emotionally recalled her journey from trying to be like Judi Dench with a "nuclear bad fake tan" to becoming a BAFTA winner.

"This is really such an incredible honour. As a little girl I never thought in a million years I would be allowed to make a film but here I am," she said.

Buckley also gave a tearful nod to her little daughter and shout out to fellow nominees for their contribution towards the world of arts.

She was casted as William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) wife Agnes in the film, which is based on Maggie O'Farrell's book of the same name.
