Martin Short daughter's cause of death revealed in initial reports

Martin Short’s family confirmed the sad passing of his daughter Katherine Hartley Short on February 23, 2026.

The Short family released a statement to announce her sad passing, revealing to TODAY.com to “confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.”

They admitted being “devastated by this loss” and asked for “privacy” during this difficult time.

Although an official cause of death is yet to be confirmed, it was reported that the 42-year-old passed away due to suicide.

The Los Angeles Fire Department attended a call about a woman residing in the Hollywood Hills on February 23.

According to People Magazine, law enforcement agency (LAPD) confirmed arriving at the scene of a “possible suicide.”

The Psychology graduate accompanied her father to only a few public events, including The Producers after party and the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in February 2011.

In years before her death, Katherine, who served as a social worker, admitted having a “service dog” Joni who has been assisting her with mental illness.

On her now-deleted professional website, the departed soul shared about her furry companion, calling her “incredible” for being with her for the "past 5 years.”

Joni stayed in her “office… cuddled up on her bed.”

Elsewhere on the same website, Katherine had sections, detailing on her specialisation in areas such as “anxiety, psychotic disorders and borderline personality disorder.”
