Margot Robbie has responded to the swirl of backlash surrounding her casting as Catherine Earnshaw in Emerald Fennell’s bold new take on Wuthering Heights.
The 35-year-old actress, whose blonde hair and Hollywood polish don’t exactly mirror Emily Brontë’s original teenage, dark-haired heroine, told British Vogue she completely understands why some fans are “side-eyeing” the casting before the film has even hit cinemas.
“I get it,” she said.
“There’s nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.”
Her co-star Jacob Elordi, 28, has also sparked debate as Heathcliff, described in the 1847 classic as “dark-skinned”.
Robbie, however, insists audiences won’t be disappointed, in fact, she claims they’ll be blown away.
“I saw him play Heathcliff. And he is Heathcliff,” she declared.
“He’s incredible… I honestly think he’s our generation’s Daniel Day-Lewis.”
The Barbie superstar says critics should simply wait and watch: “Trust me, you’ll be happy.”
Director Emerald Fennell has also weighed in, explaining why the Suicide Squad alum was the only actress fierce enough for the role.
“Cathy is a star,” Fennell said.
With that kind of confidence behind it, the film looks set to be the most talked-about adaptation of Wuthering Heights in years.
