This year's much-anticipated upcoming movie Avatar: Fire and Ash is grabbing headlines but this time not only for its visuals but for its staggering cost.
Fresh reports claim the film’s production budget has soared beyond $400 million placing it among the most expensive movies ever made.
The number is somewhat similar to the gigantic budget of Avatar: The Way of Water which jumped from $250 million to nearly $460 million because of pandemic delays, according to Variety.
James Cameron has acknowledged the immense pressure surrounding the franchise, admitting that the stakes have never been higher.
What’s raising even more eyebrows is that the $400 million figure does not include marketing.
Trade analysts see great success for the film predicting that the movie will need to earn well over $1 billion globally just to break even. Some experts believe the real threshold could be significantly higher.
The report also highlights Cameron’s complete creative control over the film, a reputation he has held for years. Industry insiders often recount stories about his uncompromising editing-room presence.
One viral example came during Avatar 2, when he reportedly dismissed a Fox executive who suggested the film be shortened, telling him, “Get the f*** out of my office.”
Avatar: The Way of Water ranks as the third-highest-grossing film of all time making creators $2.3 billion through worldwide earnings.
But the success of the previous film adds its own pressure for the upcoming sequel to the franchise.
Will this new one break all records? Only time will decide as the Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to be released in cinemas on December 19, 2025.
