Wicked director Jon M. Chu is speaking out against all the hate that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been the target of in recent times.
The duo has been brutally mocked for their emotional moments and close bond on the internet, and the Crazy Rich Asians has called out those that are responsible for it.
At a panel at an American Cinematheque at the Wicked: For Good screening, Jon began, “I do have to say, for us to be at a time when you can have these two amazing women emerge from their shells to share love and friendship and the importance of that, unabashedly, no cynicism.”
“To be able to share that vulnerability and wounds with the world, knowing people are going to come out with their knives, shame on people who put that down.”
Jon added that Arian and Cynthia were giving us everything, which is why people were drawn to them at the first place, because of the love and friendship they displayed, and that these things should be cherished rather than picked apart.
Notably, SZA also stood up for the Harriet actress, labelling the hate directed towards her as misgynoir and calling for it to stop.
Yes, Cynthia has been dating her longtime partner Lena Waithe, and the two were last spotted together in March of 2025.
