Duchess Sophie has kicked off one of her most significant solo royal tours to date, which is a nine-day journey across South and Central America, highlighting her growing influence within the modern monarchy.
The Duchess of Edinburgh, 60, began her official visit today and will travel through Peru, Panama, Guatemala, and Belize before returning to the UK on November 19.
Her husband, Prince Edward, will not accompany her on this tour.
In Peru, Sophie will visit the Amazon rainforest, meeting Indigenous women leading environmental and economic initiatives.
She will also visit the Divino Niño Vision Centre as part of her work as Global Ambassador for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, observing local eye-care programs combating glaucoma.
In Panama, the Duchess will meet senior government officials to discuss cooperation on global issues, including conflict-related sexual violence, a cause close to her heart.
Her time in Guatemala will focus on anti-trafficking initiatives and support systems for survivors of sexual violence.
Finally, in Belize, Sophie will celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day, visit the British Army Training Support Unit, and explore conservation projects in the Maya Biosphere Reserve.
A Palace insider described the trip as “one of Sophie’s most purposeful and impactful tours yet.”
