Hilary Duff, who made a strong comeback to the music scene after 10 years, has revealed that her new single Mature was inspired by a fleeting relationship with an ex, and it’s not as romantic as it sounds.
The 38-year-old singer and actress, who co-wrote the track with her husband Matthew Koma, told Vogue the song is “definitely about a brief experience” from her past.
“It’s not totally autobiographical,” she admitted.
“I took a few artistic liberties to make it work, but the gist is the gist.”
Hilary confessed that writing the track was “super therapeutic”, even if revisiting her past was daunting.
“I was looking back and wondering if that guy had a thing for younger women or if I was ‘special’. It’s a conversation with my younger self about being happy with where I landed,” she shared.
The Lizzie McGuire actress also opened up about how her husband inspired the creative process.
“Matt knows all my stories and he’s great at coming up with concepts where I can go in and interior design the whole thing,” she joked.
And while the couple’s partnership seems picture-perfect now, the songstress admitted she once “couldn’t stand” Koma while pregnant with their daughter Banks.
Hilary Duff has had a few high-profile relationships over the years.
She was first married to NHL player Mike Comrie, with whom she shares a son, Luca. The couple divorced in 2016.
Afterward, she dated musician Jason Walsh and briefly saw actor Matthew Koma before their relationship turned serious.
The Stranger hitmaker eventually married Koma, and they now have two children together.
