Lizzo, known for her bold personality and chart-topping anthems, has found herself in legal hot water after being hit with a copyright infringement complaint.
The 37-year-old singer, who is currently working on an unreleased track she teased online, reportedly used a snippet of the disputed song in a TikTok video earlier this summer.
In the clip, she cheekily referenced Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle advert with the line, “B****, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney.”
According to court filings submitted on October 21, Georgia-based rights holder GRC Trust claims Lizzo sampled elements from the 1970s soul classic Win or Lose (We Tried) by Sam Dees without permission.
Although the track has never been released or monetised, the complaint argues that even the 13-second preview was enough exposure to make her liable.
GRC Trust says it tried to reach an agreement with the About Damn Time hitmaker, but “reached an impasse, necessitating the filing of this case.”
Lizzo’s representatives said they were “surprised” by the lawsuit, insisting the song “has never been commercially released or monetised.”
The legal dispute comes as the songstress opened up about her struggles with music algorithms, revealing she’s “stressing out” that fans “don’t even know” she released her latest mixtape, My Face Hurts From Smiling, featuring SZA and Doja Cat.
Lizzo’s most recent music releases include Love in Real Life, which dropped on February 28, 2025, and Still Bad, released shortly after on March 13, 2025.
