Renee Rapp sat down for an interview where she opened up about why she hasn’t gone in certain directions for her music.
While many of the singer’s fans have insisted that she make an album within the R&B genre, claiming it suits her voice, she has hesitated to do so.
“Any non-Black person that makes anything that can be deemed remotely soulful or R&B…historically will always be praised and uplifted much more than people who are actually Black and make R&B music […],” she explained.
Rapp went on to declare decisively, “I would never consider an album of mine at any point to be R&B because in my opinion, R&B is just tied to something much more culturally significant than me.”
Fans were torn by her statement, with many applauding her stance on doing what most singers do not, while others claimed she was trying to be too “woke.”
One user gushed over her words, writing on X, “Am I the only one took it as her saying she don’t wanna do it because she would get praised more and there’s other artist who’ve worked long and harder at it. Would be a disservice to them. She get 10s from me tbh.”
Another called out the people who misinterpreted her response, “Muni long came out and said labels were requesting she wrote r&b/soul songs specifically for white artist but y'all stay dense and pretend u don't know what she's talking about.”
One user critiqued Rapp’s thinking, questioning, “This mentality is only going to contribute to the racial segregation of music. If you want to make an R&B album as a white artist, why not do so but then collaborate with up and coming black R&B artists as well?”
