Alkaline Trio have cancelled their UK tour just hours before the first show was due to begin citing worsening medical issues affecting frontman Matt Skiba.
The pop-punk band had been scheduled to open the run at the O2 Institute in Birmingham on July 3 before continuing with headline shows in London, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester.
They were also set to headline 2000 Trees festival in Cheltenham on July 9 as part of the tour.
In a statement shared with fans the band said they were pulling out of the UK dates because Skiba’s health had deteriorated and he needed treatment in the United States.
“We are immensely sorry but we must cancel our dates in England, including tonight’s show in Birmingham, due to medical issues Matt has been suffering from that have worsened,” the group said.
“He’s gonna be okay but needs to be treated stateside as soon as possible. We will be back healthier and stronger!”
The band did not reveal the exact nature of Skiba’s condition. However the singer recently told fans he was recovering from a motorcycle crash before travelling to Europe.
Last week Skiba shared a photo of his bandaged leg on Instagram and said he was trying to manage the injury while continuing the band’s festival appearances overseas.
“Elevating and hydrating as best as possible for today’s show Vainstream Rock Fest party people,” he wrote. “Jacked up but hoping to play on my feet today. Fingers crossed. Had a lil motorbike crash before leaving Los Angeles for Europa. I’m gonna do my best.”
Fans who purchased tickets for the cancelled UK headline shows have been advised that refunds will be available from the original point of purchase.
Alkaline Trio’s next scheduled live appearance is currently listed as the Vans Warped Tour in Montreal next month.
