Meghan Markle faces backlash over Jane Goodall tribute post
Meghan and Harry described Goodall as a “visionary humanitarian, scientist, friend to the planet, and friend to us.”
Royal fans have taken aim at Meghan Markle after her tribute to the late Dr. Jane Goodall DBE focused on a personal anecdote rather than the pioneering scientist’s legacy.
Dr. Goodall, a UN Messenger of Peace and one of the world’s most respected conservationists, died on October 1.
Tributes poured in from around the globe, including from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who described her as a “visionary humanitarian, scientist, friend to the planet, and friend to us.”
The couple added that Goodall “held our son, Archie, when he was first born, and showered love and care to those who were privileged to know her.”
But fans were quick to criticise the statement, accusing the Sussexes of centering themselves. One X user fumed: “That’s what those two clowns decide to mention—an irrelevant humblebrag. Instead of focusing on her achievements, they make it about Archie.”
Another echoed the sentiment: “She was a global icon. Who cares if she held Archie? That’s not her legacy.”
The backlash comes despite Harry and Meghan’s long association with Goodall, who visited them at Frogmore Cottage in 2019, famously cuddling baby Archie.
