Charlie Hunnam dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey’s Christian Grey role and has no regrets—but Dakota Johnson didn’t make it easy.

Speaking with Variety about his upcoming starring role in Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Hunnam said he and Johnson, 35, ran into each other recently, a decade after the first Fifty Shades film hit theaters.

"She gave me a bit of a hard time about it in a very fun way," Hunnam said, referring to quitting the role of Christian Grey, which eventually went to Jamie Dornan.

The actor added that initially taking on the gig and later backing out, he “just wasn’t thinking clearly," noting with a laugh that he "never looked back."

Dornan starred as Christian Grey opposite Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia “Ana” Steele in all three Fifty Shades films based on E. L. James’ novels: Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), Fifty Shades Darker (2017), and Fifty Shades Freed (2018).

Recently, speaking with British GQ about the backlash surrounding the films, Dornan said he was "relieved" Hunnam had initially landed the role, explaining, "[I thought], 'F---, that's great, what a nightmare for that guy. He's going to have all this scrutiny.'"

However, Dornan admitted he “felt the wrath of hatred” as soon as he landed the role after Hunnam stepped away.

Despite the backlash, he maintained he had no regrets, noting that taking the part opened the door to new opportunities in his acting career.
