Colin Firths ex-wife slams royal family and returns MBE over Trump banquet

Livia Giuggioli Firth, sustainable fashion advocate and ex-wife of actor Colin Firth, has announced she is returning her MBE in protest at the Royal Family’s recent treatment of Donald Trump.

In a video posted to Instagram, the 56-year-old activist ripped up her official MBE certificate and displayed the medal she now intends to hand back.

“In 2019, I was given this MBE for my work to make the fashion supply chain fairer for garment workers worldwide,” she said.

“I accepted it on behalf of activists who taught me. But after last week’s state visit, I can’t reconcile what I saw.”

Giuggioli Firth accused the royals of legitimizing Trump during his Windsor Castle banquet, calling it “a cowardly display of appeasement” that betrayed values she once admired in King Charles.

She added: “Trump stands for the obliteration of the natural world and the most vulnerable people on earth. That grotesque pantomime showed me nothing of justice or fairness.”

The activist was married to Oscar-winner Colin Firth from 1997 until 2021, and the pair share two sons. Colin has not commented on his ex-wife’s protest.

Giuggioli Firth joins a list of stars, including Michael Sheen and Alan Cumming, who have returned royal honours over concerns about Britain’s colonial past and the monarchy’s symbolism.
